The Firewood Poem
Beech wood fires burn bright and clear
If the logs are kept a year
Store your Beech for Christmas tide
With new cut Holly laid aside
Chestnuts are only good they say
If for years tis stored away
Birch and Fir wood burn too fast
Blaze too bright and do not last
Flames from larch will shoot up high
Dangerously the sparks will fly
But Ash wood green and Ash wood brown
Are fit for Queen with a golden crown
Oak logs if dry and old
Keep away the winters cold
Poplar gives a bitter smoke
Fills your eyes and makes you choke
It is by the Irish said
Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread
Apple wood will sent the room
Pear wood smells like flowers in bloom
But Ash wood wet and Ash wood dry
A king may warm his slippers by.

Logs .... Stacking,storing and burning

The Firewood poem is generally sound advice, in a nutshell, hardwood is better and longer lasting than softwood, with Ash probably being the best for most peoples needs.
Well seasoned or kiln dried logs should always be used as they cause less soot  deposits on the chimney lining.
Store logs for as long as possible before use, in a dry, well ventilated log store. Logs will dry more quickly if  they are stacked on pallets, allowing air to circulate around the logs.
I find it a good idea  to split the log store into two sections : one side for logs being burnt, the other side for drying fresh cut logs.
